Bone: Located in the middle of San Antonio, this course was built in an old quarry. In the 30’s and 40’s this are was known as “Cementtown” because the tailings left over from the rock was made into concrete at the plant adjacent to the quarry. That plant is now a high-end shopping center and the shanties that the workers lived in that surrounded the quarry are now $400,000 to $1 million homes…no shacks here! The front nine is in the quarry and can get Africa hot in the summer due to no wind circulation. The holes are named as well as numbered. The #1 handicap hole is “Water Grave” due to rain runoff that fills the deepest parts of the quarry. There is “Devil’s Ditch”, “Escape from Alcatraz”, and “Fire in the Hole”. These are apt names due to the fact that accuracy is at a premium on this course. Don’t let the short professional yardage fool you. Championship length is long enough for 99% of us. Some trees are under sheer cliffs of Texas limestone. The back nine is somewhat cooler, but it has its challenges. This is an affordable course with many challenges for all types of golfers. You must play it once…but do it in the winter!!!
