Stone: Now a Grand Canyon University golf course. Brand new clubhouse, renovated course with many new sand traps. They pushed some of the greens back 20-40 yards, elevated some of them, and in general it is a much nicer layout and certainly in much better condition. A welcome upgrade.

Malibu: This golf course has recently had a major renovation. the change has been awesome. The fairways were in great shape, greens were fast and difficult to read, but in great shape. Sand traps were hard to negotiate but were fair. Fees were air. Will play again. Looking to improve on score next time.

Bone: My first time at Scaryvale G.C. and the changes made by Grand Canyon University have made the course very playable. In very good shape from fairways to bathrooms. Traps are in play, but well kept and lots of sand. Greens were fast, but true. Young, polite, and energetic staff helped make it a fun day. Will play again.

Comments

Malibu: This course has changed for the better. The fairways were in great shape, sand traps had enough sand for a good shot. The greens were in good shape. Most shots in the rough were playable. There are few if any trees to contend with. Overall we had a fun experience.

Stone: Long links style course. Looks intimidating, but surprisingly fair and was not as tough as it looks. Lots of sand traps. Lots of natural rough in the wash areas. So will probably be a slow course to play when the “once a year” golfers come out to play in the winter as they will spend a lot time searching for their lost golf balls. Tee boxes were hard as a rock, almost impossible to get a tee in the ground without a hammer, but the course overall was in very nice shape for the summer. A little different from the usual Arizona courses, and I liked it.

MyTi: They did a nice job with the redesign. Bunkers frame the landing area nicely. A number of short Par 4’s will make you make a choice. Probably not the best course in Scottsdale, but still a nice track.

Comments

Malibu: It is not often you have the chance to play this course, it has been a private course for years and recently open to some public play. The fairways, greens and tees were in very good condition. Fairways were tree lined for the most part. Fun play.

Bone: Fun course with varying par 4’s in length and approaches. Little water and fair chances for birdies, though greens are large and 3-putts are lurking.

Stone: Nice clubhouse restaurant, extremely nice staff. There is a significant difference between private club staff and public course staff. Even the high end public course staff is rarely as genuinely helpful and friendly as a private course. A real treat. Course is traditional and fun, but nothing special. Some greens are huge, all were in good shape. Fun course, fun day. Try if you can.

MyTi: Fun course. Traditional style, greens fantastic, bunkers good quality. Nice that it is open to some public play.

QuickBuck: This course went from the top of my list of courses not to play to the top of my list to play anytime I get a chance. When the new clubhouse is finished it will be in the top 10 places to play in Scottsdale.

Malibu: This course has been renovated and they have done a super job. Greens, fairways, sandtraps, etc. are in great shape. I look forward to another outing here. Had a great time.

MyTi: They did a great job on the re-design. Bunkers in great shape as is the rest of the course. Really fun.

Stone: What a change! This course has gone from “do not play at any price” to a very playable, enjoyable destination for golf. It was in great shape after overseeding, and the formerly punitive nature of the course has been eradicated. There is still trouble, would not recommend walking this course, and the 9th hole a little difficult to figure out from the tee unless you have played here before. But overall a very nice Scottsdale desert course. Recommended.

QuickBuck:

Malibu: We played this course on a hot August day. But the heat didn’t seem to have much effect on the condition of this course overall. The tees were in nice shape, fairways were wide enough for strays to stay in play on nice fairway grass. Sandtraps had ample sand in them. Greens varied in size and were in very good condition. Yardage markers were difficult to locate. Overall, fun experience.

Stone: Normally private, open to some public play so took advantage of the opportunity. Not an exciting course visually, it was a typical desert style public course except the surrounding homes were further back than they would be on a public course. It was in very good condition considering the time of year, and the people were very friendly. Wide variation in the green size, from very large to very small, but all were in good condition. Good food in restaurant. Glad we played, but more interesting choices available in the valley.

Subette: Definitely tricky coming off the tee. Need to know distances to trees and landmarks and where the hidden washes are in order to get your ball in the fairway. The views in the canyons are absolutely amazing. Greens are larger than they appear with many slopes and breaks that are hard to see. Fun to play, but fair to play as long as you land it where you’re supposed to. Definitely worth the trip. No cell service in the canyons. [Ed. Note: Good!]

Malibu: This is a challenging course to say the least. It demands accurate shots to score well. Greens were sanded, but okay shape overall. Fairways were okay but narrow for the most part. Tough course, don’t know if I’ll play it again.

MyTi: Choose your tees wisely. Keep the ball in fairway and you can score. Wander and the score can add up. Some blind shots, but a fair course.

Subette: Super tricky. The scenery was pretty good and the trees were well groomed. The fairways were in great shape for this time of year. Lots of unfair bounces and fairways so narrow they are anorexic. Not a whole lot of fun. Too much of a members course.

Stone: Used to be a private course. Now semi-private with some tee times for the public. Narrow fairways, humps and bumps everywhere with railroad ties. (Pete Dye?) Very tricky greens; they had sanded them but we did not know until we arrived. Surprisingly the sand was not an issue, but the hilly, elevated greens were tough. A 3-putt if you were above the hole was not unusual. Friendly staff, but the cart person disappeared after the first few holes. Very nice views of the valley, nice clubhouse, fairways in outstanding shape for this time of year, but just not a lot of fun. If you hit it very straight (and where you are aiming) and are a good putter, try it. If not, either don’t bother or bring two dozen balls.

QuickBuck: Play this course, we played the Peaks course. Can’t wait to play the Ranch course. You won’t remember the drive there because the quality of everything is Top 10. You won’t remember your drive home because you will be thinking about the course that is managed by professionals that want you to have a great experience. I am not a fan of shotgun starts because they play slow. No big deal on this course. You don’t want to rush through, you will miss all the little details that are an important part of this Sonoran Desert setting.

Malibu: Located about an hours drive north of Phoenix, it is well worth the drive. This course is in prime condition. Fairways, greens and sand traps all in great shape. Accurate tee shots are needed to stay out of desert trouble. Greens were fast and difficult to read. Sand traps had ample sand in them. Overall very enjoyable experience.

Stone: Best conditioned course we played this winter. I believe usually private, but opened up for occasional public play. Typical desert course, nothing especially good, nothing bad. Just a good, solid desert course in excellent condition. Long drive, but worth trying at least once.

Stone: This course was formerly known as Estrella Mountain Ranch, see previous reviews. Apparently new ownership, good food in restaurant, and more grass on the fairways! Greens decent, still a confusing layout, but having more grass helps. Good walking course, lots of trees. More narrow than I remembered, and spent a fair amount of time in other people’s fairways. Nice views of the surrounding area from clubhouse, and just a pleasant place to play at a reasonable price.

Bone: The Rim is a very beautiful course to play. Each hole has its own wow factor and you can’t help pulling out the camera! It is the most picturesque course I have played in Arizona. The Rim offers 4 different tee lengths, which is important since the course requires some accuracy. Play the length one below your normal distance and the day will be more enjoyable. Fairways are in good shape and greens were fast and true, yet held good approaches. There are many sidehill/downhill/ uphill lies to deal with so bone up on your stances before you come to the Rim! This is a private course that is offering public play for the first time … so don’t miss your chance to play this gem.

Stone: Very unexpected. I knew it would be nice but it exceeded my expectations. Outstanding views of the Mogollon Rim from multiple holes. A little water, just enough, and a gigantic background boulder on a par 5 that is reachable in two. (Ask Bone). Very picture worthy. The fairways seemed narrow, but were not a genuine problem, and you could easily see where you wanted to go from the tee box. A very enjoyable round; highly recommended!
