Subette: Definitely tricky coming off the tee. Need to know distances to trees and landmarks and where the hidden washes are in order to get your ball in the fairway. The views in the canyons are absolutely amazing. Greens are larger than they appear with many slopes and breaks that are hard to see. Fun to play, but fair to play as long as you land it where you’re supposed to. Definitely worth the trip. No cell service in the canyons. [Ed. Note: Good!]

Malibu: This is a challenging course to say the least. It demands accurate shots to score well. Greens were sanded, but okay shape overall. Fairways were okay but narrow for the most part. Tough course, don’t know if I’ll play it again.

MyTi: Choose your tees wisely. Keep the ball in fairway and you can score. Wander and the score can add up. Some blind shots, but a fair course.

Subette: Super tricky. The scenery was pretty good and the trees were well groomed. The fairways were in great shape for this time of year. Lots of unfair bounces and fairways so narrow they are anorexic. Not a whole lot of fun. Too much of a members course.

Stone: Used to be a private course. Now semi-private with some tee times for the public. Narrow fairways, humps and bumps everywhere with railroad ties. (Pete Dye?) Very tricky greens; they had sanded them but we did not know until we arrived. Surprisingly the sand was not an issue, but the hilly, elevated greens were tough. A 3-putt if you were above the hole was not unusual. Friendly staff, but the cart person disappeared after the first few holes. Very nice views of the valley, nice clubhouse, fairways in outstanding shape for this time of year, but just not a lot of fun. If you hit it very straight (and where you are aiming) and are a good putter, try it. If not, either don’t bother or bring two dozen balls.

QuickBuck: Play this course, we played the Peaks course. Can’t wait to play the Ranch course. You won’t remember the drive there because the quality of everything is Top 10. You won’t remember your drive home because you will be thinking about the course that is managed by professionals that want you to have a great experience. I am not a fan of shotgun starts because they play slow. No big deal on this course. You don’t want to rush through, you will miss all the little details that are an important part of this Sonoran Desert setting.

Malibu: Located about an hours drive north of Phoenix, it is well worth the drive. This course is in prime condition. Fairways, greens and sand traps all in great shape. Accurate tee shots are needed to stay out of desert trouble. Greens were fast and difficult to read. Sand traps had ample sand in them. Overall very enjoyable experience.

Stone: Best conditioned course we played this winter. I believe usually private, but opened up for occasional public play. Typical desert course, nothing especially good, nothing bad. Just a good, solid desert course in excellent condition. Long drive, but worth trying at least once.

Stone: This course was formerly known as Estrella Mountain Ranch, see previous reviews. Apparently new ownership, good food in restaurant, and more grass on the fairways! Greens decent, still a confusing layout, but having more grass helps. Good walking course, lots of trees. More narrow than I remembered, and spent a fair amount of time in other people’s fairways. Nice views of the surrounding area from clubhouse, and just a pleasant place to play at a reasonable price.

Bone: The Rim is a very beautiful course to play. Each hole has its own wow factor and you can’t help pulling out the camera! It is the most picturesque course I have played in Arizona. The Rim offers 4 different tee lengths, which is important since the course requires some accuracy. Play the length one below your normal distance and the day will be more enjoyable. Fairways are in good shape and greens were fast and true, yet held good approaches. There are many sidehill/downhill/ uphill lies to deal with so bone up on your stances before you come to the Rim! This is a private course that is offering public play for the first time … so don’t miss your chance to play this gem.

Stone: Very unexpected. I knew it would be nice but it exceeded my expectations. Outstanding views of the Mogollon Rim from multiple holes. A little water, just enough, and a gigantic background boulder on a par 5 that is reachable in two. (Ask Bone). Very picture worthy. The fairways seemed narrow, but were not a genuine problem, and you could easily see where you wanted to go from the tee box. A very enjoyable round; highly recommended!

Ralphy: For a limited time, this is your chance to play a private country club. Take advantage of this opportunity! This is a beautiful course (and clubhouse) next to the Superstition Mountains. One of the best deals in the Valley at $50.00.

Stone: A beautiful golf clubhouse with two courses where LPGA played tournaments until recently. Previously private, opened doors to public temporarily so take advantage of it if you can. The other course is more scenic but both are nice. Pretty typical desert style course, so bring lots of balls. And, you either hit it straight or you visit the local rattlesnake habitat! Even though Maurice is not likely to be there, use caution.

Subette: The greens are ridiculously spongy and the course doesn’t exactly have star quality, but there’s a certain charm about it and plenty of wildflowers and green grass to take your mind off of the muddy bunkers. Perfect for a pleasant, fair weather jaunt up north to play 9 holes.

Stone: Beautiful scenery, great summer weather. Probably could play here in the late fall/winter/early spring, but no need to do so if you live in Phoenix. Short course, good for the ego, but you still have to be able to hit it where you want it to go. If not, the rough is abundant and in places is a type of rough you do not want any part of. Nice restaurant and bar, nice people, very enjoyable.

QuickBuck: What a surprise! Course was in midwinter condition. A combination of a desert, resort and tract home course. Houses get close on some holes then opens up to a good looking desert. Hole 12 is great. It has all the challenges built into one hole. It is a long drive but a great experience. In a few years the landscape will grow in and all the homes will be built. It will change, not sure for good or bad, so we will have to play it yearly.

Malibu: This is a beautiful course located in “No Mans Land”, ha ha. In far West Valley, way west of Phoenix. It is well worth the drive. It has a nice layout, with wide fairways and the greens are in nice shape. Sand traps were also in very good shape. Overall fun experience.

Stone: Like QuickBuck, for me it was a “surprise”, but actually it is west of Surprise, Arizona. I did not think that was possible, but after you drive what seemed like 10 miles down Bell Road on a four line divided highway seemingly headed to nowhere, there it is! Presently a Troon managed facility, and in excellent shape. An oasis in the desert known as Sun City Festival, a three and a half year old Del Webb/Pulte retirement community development. True desert views with nothing except Sun City Festival for miles. Much more interesting than Poston Butte, the East Valley counterpart, and really a fun course to play. Not the typical back and forth type of course you see in a lot of home development golf courses. Quite a bit of thought put into this course. If you live on the west side of town, it is a must play!

QuickBuck: Tough course, you must use the right club. You will never know which one until you play it. They take good care of it. Every fairway was green. All the tee boxes are domed, and it will mess you up. No sand traps! What a treat. The greens are tricky. Pin placement can be challenging if they want it to be.

Malibu: Nice inexpensive golf without any sand traps to contend with. Overall condition of this course is good. Fairways were in nice shape. Greens were in very nice shape, but hard to read. For the money, fun experience.

Bone: Difficult course to review. Played with only three clubs to celebrate our 100th golf course review. Only 5860 yards from back tees, changes strategy dramatically. Make sure you play with someone who has played before; can’t tell which way holes go sometimes. Retirement course.

Stone: Interesting course. Restaurant/patio dining outside. No real clubhouse, but okay pro shop with some nice sales in progress. Nice people, tricky course which will eat your lunch with narrow fairways and lots of water. If you have not played here before, bring lots of balls as some of the water is hidden or deceptively close. Many right and left doglegs and trees so even though the course is short and may have an easier slope/rating, it is much more difficult than you would expect. Having said all that, the course is fair but can be frustrating; four of us started with three clubs each, one of us left with only two and it wasn’t because he forgot it somewhere on the course…

QuickBuck: OK course for a subdivision. The price is right for the conditions if you don’t mind the drive. Can’t make any recommendations because this is a retirement community course, and all that would happen is the price will go up.

Malibu: Located west of Phoenix, in Surprise, Arizona. A nice course for the money. There are few trees to contend with, fairways are open and in nice condition. Greens also were in nice shape. Overall fun experience.

Bone: A good course for mid to high handicappers. More of a retirement community course. Wide fairways, large greens. Back tees a bit over 6,000 yards. Seems to have a lot of retirees. Nice staff.

Stone: Nice short course with a few twists and turns to make it interesting. Course in good condition. You can score well here, so good for the ego. Very large greens, can get a hot dog or hamburger, but that is almost it as the restaurant is part of the pro shop. Next door bar, more of a retirement community golf course with some pretty exotic golf carts on the course. Not a destination course unless someone you know lives there.
