Comments

Malibu: Nice Scottsdale course for the money. Nice layout, large fairways for the most part. Fairways were in nice condition. Greens were also in good condition. Sand traps were in wet and muddy conditions. Overall fun experience.

QuickBuck: Great location! An average golf course for Phoenix. Most fairways are lined with homes. The creek comes into play a lot, if you are in it the ball is unplayable. The greens must have been designed by Pete Dye and are not easy to read. The price was right for this time of year. I wonder how cheap it will get this summer.

Stone: Big creek washes with lots of extra golf balls if you run out of your favorite brand. The Callaway Warbirds seem to be popular on the course, found two or three nearly new ones while searching for a lost ball – not mine, of course – but if searching keep an eye out for snakes! I have never really liked this course, so play it rarely, but must say that it was in good condition, and if you can hit the ball where you want to (I did today) it can be a fun course. Greens had been sanded recently but rolled true, and enough variety to keep it interesting. A good choice for the price we paid for this time of year.

Comments

Steadfast: Too many kids playing in bunkers? Hope they had fun. Are the GPS distances accurate? Always have fun here.

Malibu: Bring your “A” game with you, you will need it, this course demands accuracy. Target golf is a requirement. Tough but fun play. Fairways were in very nice shape. Greens were hard to read but in good shape. Sand traps also were good. Fun play overall.

Sub: Tough course for an amateur like me. Bring ammo… No defined landing areas…Maybe easier if played from the back tees…Great service, though…

Stone: Short, tricked up course for the first five or six holes. Back nine is very enjoyable, with great views but not too crazy about the redesign which means you finish on a par three. Old Phantom Horse version had eighteen with water, a good finishing hole. Impressive new clubhouse/pro shop/restaurant/bar, very people friendly, and the view of Phoenix from the new 18th hole is spectacular. GPS did not seem to be working properly, at least today. Rustler’s Roost is nearby for that cowboy dining experience. Not an everyday course, but fun to play a few times. Formerly Phantom Horse.

Comments

Steadfast: Enjoyed the day, course fits my ability – gold tees.

QuickBuck: Old links course. Lots of trees and a creek that winds through. The creek and the water pops up when you least expect it. They always take good care of it, but it will never be in top 10 condition. Can’t say anything great about it, nor can I find any real negative features to mention.

Stone: Lots of trees, flat traditional course. More water than I remembered, greens rolled true, but a little slow as the Bermuda is becoming reestablished. Course in overall good condition. Surrounded by DPS officers on a golf outing, so minded our manners! Nothing special, the Gold is the best Wigwam course, but worth a trip to Litchfield if you have never played one of the three courses there.

Comments

Malibu: This beautiful course has a nice layout. Fairways were fairly open and in nice shape. Greens were also in nice shape. Sand traps were in need of sand. There were an abundance of yardage markers. Fun play.

QuickBuck: Play this course any time. 5 sets of tees will challenge you or make your day. This course can be tough; short is better than long. They have placed lots of sand traps to make you crazy if you don’t plan your shot. Long drive from the east, but I will be back.

Sub: Nice course, better to play in the “winter”. Don’t play it too short, the better landing areas are from the whites or further back. Very nice greens. Playing speed is fine, not much waiting on shots. Nice restaurant and bar.

Stone: Lots and lots of tees, from 7291 yards down to 5573, with plenty of choices in between. Lots and lots of people here too, for both the course and the restaurant, which made for a nice atmosphere. The staff at both the course and restaurant/bar were friendly too. I played this course years ago after it opened and was unimpressed, but it has really matured nicely! Great fairways and greens in good condition, but like so many valley courses, only dirt in the sand traps (and there are a lot of them) under a 1/2 inch of sand. Only strange thing we noticed was the fact they were watering the desert areas, presumably to promote the “native grass” which obviously came from somewhere other than the Sonoran Desert. Very enjoyable course; highly recommended.
