Comments

QuickBuck: Above average subdivision course, more like a resort course. Homes rarely come into play. The greens were a serious issue. Just plain bad! Check the pro shop about the greens. This summer it will be impossible to have playable greens. Long drive from Phoenix. $50.00 is the right price.

Subette: The desert is really gorgeous, especially in the spring time when the flowers are blooming. Tee boxes were very flat and the fairways were in outstanding condition. Would recommend “sky caddy,” as yardages were well-marked but not always accurate. Bathrooms were a little scarce for a desert course. There is no shade.

Malibu: This is a desert target course that had nice fairways. Views were okay. Greens were in bad shape, most in need of major repair. Sand traps were in poor condition. Course layout is nice, but could use maintenance.

Stone: Long drive, but nice views and quiet. Fairways and tee boxes beautiful, sand traps a little below average, but the greens were just awful. Number one was obviously unplayable and should have had a temporary green. The rest were not a whole lot better with inconsistent green speed and poor maintenance. Subette missed a putt because it jumped when it hit the old cup placement which had not been properly repaired. Many tee boxes to fit everyone’s game. Also easier than Grayhawk, with better views. Fix the greens and it will be a great place to play!

QuickBuck: Only the basics are done or are available here, if you are looking for fancy – this ain’t it. The rough is dirt in March. Look out in the summer, it will be a mess. Greens are tough to read, the pin placement can be brutal. Never pay more than $20.00 to play this course.

Malibu: Old course that could use some TLC. Trees are abundant. Fairways are tree lined. Sand traps are in need of sand. Greens were in fair shape, one had its own small sand trap built in :) ! Fun for the money.

Stone: Confusing layout and rough just dirt, but surprisingly fun to play. Narrow fairways, but greens were good and scenery better than what we usually see. Although not as odd as the bagpipes playing at Kierland, the mini sand trap on the green was, to say the least, unusual. Would gladly play again, and a good value for the money. Update November, 2010: This course is now called “Tres Rios”. See that course for updated review.

Quickbuck: Old west side retirement course. Lots of trees. Not very interesting. They do what is necessary to get by. The price is right for the course this time of year. Don’t let the country club name fool you, this is very close to the quality of a municipal course.

Bone: Though I played horribly, this is not a difficult course. Long, straight drives produce short pitches on par 4’s. Can play course differently with long irons to produce longer approaches and utilize the whole bag. Retirement community with EMT’s nearby.

Malibu: This is an old, mature, tree lined course that is in good to fair condition. Yardage markers are hard to come by. Fairways were okay, greens were good, sand traps needed work. Okay course for the money.

Stone: Original Sun City course, we were told. Old trees, with a traditional layout surrounded by lots of homes built in the early 70’s. Narrow fairways, slow greens, but fairways in good shape and unusual sand traps – they were overflowing with new sand! Quite nice for a change. Older crowd (that’s a surprise!). Nice people and a great day.

QuickBuck: Nice course in good condition. Greens were fast. We followed a tournament so the pin placement was tough. Water on eight holes. There are more sand traps on this course than any course in Arizona, sand was medium to hard packed. It is lined with houses boarded by walls that easily come into play. If you are hitting the ball fairly straight this course can be fun.

MyTi: Solid traditional course. Good mix of holes. Greens are very undulating and must take the hills into consideration when reading. Lots of shot options around the greens. Fun, playable, and challenging.

Malibu: Interesting layout. Demands accurate tee shots to stay out of trouble. Trees are abundant. Fairways were in nice shape, greens were in good shape, but difficult to read. Sand traps were everywhere. Overall fun experience.

Stone: Tricky traditional course with lots of water and numerous sand traps. You must pay attention and use your course management skills or will shoot a big number. Condition of rough was poor, but greens were in great shape and very fast. Too fast for me – even my eagle on number 2 didn’t keep me from getting the snake. Staff was friendly, and helped made the round very enjoyable. Not a special course despite the high ratings given by my playing partners. But if you are in the area and in the mood to think on the golf course, this could be a good choice.
