Bone: This is the sister course, designed by Arnold Palmer, of the Resort Course at La Cantera which hosts the Valero Texas Open. It has elevation changes on every hole and no two holes are remotely alike. It is very challenging with extremely hard to read greens that are very fast. The area has a fault line which runs through the course and the putts break towards this. Add a foot or more to your read! The wind was blowing 25-35 mph today and the course has many holes in this Texas Hill Country around the top of those very hills. The pro shop has been rated in the top 100 for many consecutive years. A sleeve of balls is only $8.50 but I found out that it is because you will find many more on the course! There are no out of bounds… The entire course is played as a lateral hazard and you can play them if you find them. I found over 30 balls while searching for mine. Some very nice Pro V-1’s I might add. The course is laced with live oak trees which are native this area of Texas. Sand traps had the white silica-type sand and were very soft, deep and playable. This course has 5 different tees to play from and golfer should be careful not to assume they can play from their usual distances and score on this course. Go back one or two tees on this very difficult yet fun course.

Comments

DufferDoc: This course is long (for anyone who doesn’t hit it straight) and narrow - but really rewards the down-the-middle golfer. There are several challenging holes and the scenery is California hilly. It is cheap…but you’ll get lots of enjoyment and you haven’t spent much money (except for balls).

Comments

DufferDoc: Most frequent negative comment: “the grounds people are not golfer-friendly” (many long fairways are always roped-off). Bunkers are gravel and always wet. Greens and fairways are adequate, not poor but not good. The grass is old, the course needs up-grading.

DufferDoc: Fast greens, beautifully mown. Fairways are tight, some trouble if you stray – straight is good! Sand in bunkers is white (!) and playable. One of Southern California’s best, especially for the money.

Stone: A mountain course with very nice views of the surrounding town on the front nine. The back nine is more or less flat, but also with some good views. It is a “shot maker’s course” for sure on the front nine, with deceptive lengths and strategically placed washes and hazards. Travelling wedding groups slowed our progress, as the beautiful setting encourages numerous weddings on site. The restaurant and bar are upper deck with an outside full length balcony to enjoy the views. The only negative was the dirt sand traps, but the cheerful and friendly staff more than made up for it. One of the best California courses I have played so far – play it if you get a chance!

Comments

Bone: Inconsistent greens and constant wind make this a one-time playing experience. It is a neighborhood club and locals within a few miles are loyal to this track. There is little else nearby. The course is very flat and uneventful. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. Would not play again.

Stone: Very flat, long and tough par threes. Not an exciting course, but the restaurant is good, the people are friendly, and the price is always right. Very playable.

QuickBuck: Tough greens; long par threes in the wind.

Malibu: The greens did not seem to hold shots well, partly due to the winds drying them out. All the par threes seemed to be long, very long shots.

Bone: Still a playable course with forgiving fairways. From back tees par 3s very challenging. Staff friendly as always. Can challenge yourself more by playing different tee lengths.

MyTi: Fairly open course. Can play most foul balls. Keep it in play and you can score. Don’t short side shots. Worth playing for fun, but not if you are looking for PGA caliber course.

Malibu: We have played this course many times and will continue to play here. The rates are fair. The course is in good shape and greens are also in good condition. I look forward to playing here soon.

Stone: We played the Blue (between the Pro and White) at 6418 yards, Beautiful day. Not the most difficult course, not the prettiest surroundings, but a good solid course with more challenges and variety than many other courses. I wouldn’t want to play it every day, but a good solid course.

Comments

Sub: I only lost two balls. Yeah!!

QuickBuck: No rewards for a good shot in the fairway. I would rather ride my dirt bike on this course. The Pete Dye hills make great jumps and are no place for a golf ball. The course was in good shape and the staff is friendly. Pete Dye ****!!!

MyTi: Classic Pete Dye. Middle of fairway not always driving range like, but still better than the mounds off the fairway. Need to play different type of shots which make it fun. Good restaurant, friendly staff.

Stone: Great restaurant, great staff, crappy course. Not much fun, and not particularly pretty with power poles everywhere. Very challenging from the tips, course is in pretty good shape, convenient location, beverage cart so solicitous it was almost annoying, but what is up with the parking lot next to the driving range with no nets? I wonder how many sliced practice balls have broken windshields and dented cars. Maybe ASU has a part interest in a windshield glass company. Should play at least once just to say you did.

Comments

Malibu: This is a fun course to play as long as tee shots don’t stray too much. Greens were in very good shape, fairways also in good condition. Sand traps were in very good shape, with ample sand. Overall fun experience.

Bone: Fairways and greens in very good shape. Off fairways and rough were below average. An old course with fairways lined with homes and trees. Back tees only 6,500 yards. Many retired winter visitors here from December to April. Play can be slow at that time. Locals in East Valley play this course in hotter months. Never very expensive and has two restaurants to choose from. One is full-service with good meals. Staff is just there to process the golfer, don’t expect lasting friendships!

Subette: Very straight forward. Ease-peezy-lemon-squeezy as long as you hit a fairly good tee shot. The greens were really smooth and well-groomed. The sand traps were in good condition with fresh sand and just the right amount. The rough varies from really thick to hard and patchy. Definitely social friendly.

Stone: I have always liked this course. Mostly older golfers (check out the lounge) but moved along at a good pace. Challenging enough for us from the back tees (200 yards + par threes), but not unfair. Rough was uneven, from U.S. Open style tall grass to dirt in some areas, but generally okay. Cannot hit woods on short driving range, but the friendly staff makes up for it.
